Dear Family

The photo below pretty much sums up the past couple of weeks ...

Overwhelming, loud, messy, bittersweet, chaotic, amusing, frustrating, exhausting, and yet {surprisingly after seeing this picture} most of the time, completely wonderful.  This is how I would describe {in so little words} our few weeks back as a family; just the four of us.  This is the first time since Violet has been born that we have been solo as a family.  It’s been amazing.  The way it makes me feel to see Juliet play with Chris again like he hasn’t been gone longer than an afternoon, is undescribable.  There’s no way I can put into words what it is exactly that chokes me up about the way Chris waddles when he walks when Violet’s strapped to the front of him in the Bjorn or how it feels to not have to lay in bed alone anymore {and no, Violet doesn’t count}.  But, what I never expected in Chris’s homecoming and our happy return as a family back in Louisiana where we “belong”, was how heartbreaking it would be to have to explain to Juliet over and over again why it is we can’t just drive over to Grandma's house and see Uncle Jon.  How do I explain to her that Papa isn’t able to read her a story tonight or change her diaper {cause Dad honestly, THAT would be amazing sometimes}.  Do we make it a point to facetime, or does that only make it worse?  Believe me, I tried to mentally prepare myself for everything when Chris returned from his deployment; how to transition him back into the family, how to help him cope if for some reason the girls didn’t take him but what's a mother to do when their baby gets hurt and tells you they want their Papa instead of you?  Or when she says she "just wants to go home now"?  All I can do is be patient, explain the best I can and hope she understands.  Time will take care of the rest.

Now, with all this being said do I think it was a mistake to go home during Chris’s deployment because of the pain it’s causing now?  Absolutely not.  The time Juliet and Violet {and me of course} got to spend with family and especially GG, was priceless.  You can’t get those times back and they are so precious.  This is such a fun age and the girls both changed so much over the course of those five months.  It was so fun to share that with the entire family {both mine and Chris’s}.  Also, being back in "reality" has helped me realize how much I needed all of their support.  Violet was just two weeks old when we flew to Seattle from Louisiana.  I don’t know how I would have made it without all the extra help.  I’m doing it now and I'm not to proud to say that it is hard as hell; it’s no fun being outnumbered, especially when one child is teething.  Because of our family I was able to take classes, hangout with girlfriends, build my portfolio and go to the gym.  If I'd been alone with the girls I would quiet possibly be 300lbs and bald from tearing my own hair out.

Thank you all so much for everything {you all know who you are}.  I love you all dearly.  I couldn’t have gotten through the last year {pregnancy and all} without you.  What I'm trying to say is ... you're pretty cool and I hope I didn't make you just cry.  Smooches.

Wipes

Violet finds the wipes irresistible.  There was a time that I'd hand her one while I was changing her diaper to keep her busy, but times have changed.  Now she'd literally eat them if I let her.  So I don't.  And nothing makes her more mad.

Mirror, mirror ... on the floor

Not one of our framed pictures or mirrors have made it up on the wall in our new place and honestly, I'm not sure we're going to even bother since we'll be moving again in mid March.  This mirror has actually been very useful right were it's at; we've been setting Violet's jumper right in front of it {you know how babies love to look at themselves}. Well this morning while sissy was napping, we slid that old jumper off to the side and Juliet and I played mirror, mirror on the wall {or in our case, floor} and I got a few self portraits of me and my Canon BFF.  Juliet was a little shy of the mirror {surprising I know} but I don't know whether it was the snapping picture of myself, or the Snow White reference that threw her off.  I have to admit, that greenish floating man-head who lives in a mirror and thinks a not so bright, squeaky voiced, pastey beyond all reason girl is the fairest one of all is a little creepy.  Hopefully during our short stay here, Juliet will get more comfortable in front of it; forget Snow White.  Ohhh how the photo opportunities are already forming in my head.

Conant Sister Apps

A couple different people have been asking me what apps the girls have on our iPad (yes, Violet is only 6.5 months old but you'd be surprised what she picks up ... never too early to learn).

I suggest every parent out there FIRST get the "mom with apps" app if you haven't already.  It is awesome.  It has loads of apps, books, a wishlist, new releases and info all on apps geared towards children.  It classifies them by age and groups them together for you (art, creative play, early learning, environment, geography, math, etc).  It's very user friendly.  And when you press "view in app store" kids chear ... it's the cutest thing ever.

Apps Juliet and Violet have:
MCB aka, monster coloring book (Juliet's favorite and possibly mine too ... the music is great and the monsters are adorable ... this company also has a lot of other educational games that I have yet to investigate)
Zoo Train (a must have, in my opinion)
Word Wagon HD
Bus
Alpha Writer
Short Vowels
Jigasaurus
Math Girl Add (this is the one in the video on facebook)
Baby Einstein (we hardly use ... I wouldn't suggest it unless you just want to watch short videos)
Flash Cards - Baby Flash Cards (Violet really likes this one.  Anyone who is into "bits or bits of intelligence", this is a really great app)
Sound Shaker (fun, but very noisy ... Violet is able to work this one)
Bug Builder (same company as Sound Shaker, very cute)
Peek-a-boo Forest
Peek-a-boo Barn (a classic ... a must have ... make sure you set it on the "kids voice over", it's uh-dorable ... Violet is also able to work this one)
Tiny Garden (Juliet rarely plays it)
Lunch Box
Strawberry Shortcake (really good for learning colors)
Color Mix HD
Caterpillar
La Mia Fattoria (Italian ... I had high hopes, but she NEVER looks at it)
Jigsaws 123 (these are great ... Juliet was able to sit down and do a wooden 16 piece puzzle without blinking an eye after using this ... there are a bunch of apps from this same company that I've heard good things about)

iBooks
Sandra Boynton has some great children's audio books available (she's one of our favorites).  Juliet loves following along and flipping the pages ... they're definitely worth checking out.

FYI.  Let's be real, all these games are highly addictive.  It was a life saver on our week long drive but now we literally have to schedule times for Juliet to play, or she'd be on the iPad all day long.  I'd suggest putting it on "airplane mode" at all times while they're playing so the "internet waves" don't fry their little brains.  Most importantly, do NOT underestimate the wit of a toddler ... they WILL go shopping, so set your "privacy" first thing.

If anyone knows of other kid friendly apps, books or videos, PLEASE let me know!  Hope this is helpful :)

Preparing To Crawl?

Violet has been up on all fours all day.  She'll get up and then fall back on her belly and do sort of a worm move to get to toys she wants.  Juliet was helping me cheer her on until she realized that sissy was after her toys.  This could get ugly real quick.

Road {day six}

Del Rio; last of the road pictures.  We made a little detour so we could stop by Del Rio and San Antonio on our way home to visit with friends.  Our memories of Del Rio have always been great so we love to go back and visit the winery were I worked, and the base where we lived.  We figure, seeing old friends and family along the way is what makes the road trip.  Once upon a time this little Del Rio group of ours was hanging out with no kids and now we each have two or one and one on the way.  Oh how times have changed.  BUT, I had just as much fun at the park on base then I ever did at the martini bar.

Road {day five}

Arizona.  We met an old friend for dinner (In-N-Out of course) and got to meet her sweet baby boy for the first time.  Then we crashed in a TLF at Davis AFB in Tucson for the night.  A big toy was conveniently within walking distance from our room so the next morning before heading back out Juliet, Vi and I ran off some steam while lucky duck Chris packed up the truck.

Road {day four}

The Grand Canyon.  We thought it would be a great idea to drive 3 hours out of our way to show the girls the Grand Canyon.  Juliet calling it the "big hole" should have been our first clue that this wasn't such a genius idea.  As it turns out, toddlers could care less about a lot of rocks and a hole in the ground; go figure?

The only thing that got Juliet really excited was the observatory room and the focet that squirted out fresh canyon water.  I think she may have gotten a little wet.

Headed back to the truck after our 13 minute visit.  It was worth the pictures I suppose.
